For bibliophiles, every day is National Book Lovers Day, but the official day to celebrate this literary holiday is August 9th. If you love books, then you may be inclined to spend the entire day nose-deep in your latest or your favorite read, which is an excellent way to celebrate the day. However, what if you spent the day celebrating your love of books in ways that aren’t just reading alone all day?! Fresh out of ideas? Worry not, dear friend, because we’ve got you covered with these 4 additional ways to celebrate National Book Lovers Day:
Host a Book Club
You know what’s better than reading an awesome book, stimulating conversation about that awesome book with another fan…or a non-fan if you like your stimulating conversation to get a little heated. If your book friends are local, invite them over to your place for wine, cheese, and discussion. If your book club members are global, then take advantage of 21st century technology, start a Twitter chat or host a Google hangout!
Become a Storyteller
For the book lover who is also altruistic, why not share your love of books by reading to the seniors who could use some company at the retirement and nursing homes in your community. You could also foster the joy of reading in the youngsters by sharing your favorite children’s book during story hour for the neighborhood kids at your local library or bookstore.
Throw a Party
Who says you have to wait until Halloween to have a costume party?! We say throw caution to the wind and being brave and daring like so many of our favorite literary characters. Still waiting for your Hogwarts acceptance letter? Have your guests come dressed to represent their Hogwarts House. Longing to live in Middle-earth? Have guests dress as their favorite members of the fellowship. Love Jane Austen and her heroines? Host a 19th century tea. You can even have a costume contest and reward the winner with a gift certificate to a local bookstore, which ties into:
Due to increased online shopping over the past years, local bookstores are becoming harder to find. Why not celebrate this day of loving books of all shapes and sizes by showing some love to an independent bookstore near you. Stop by and buy a book or three! No matter if the books are new or used, you will be supporting your local economy and a small business owner. Sounds like a win-win situation all around!
